Professor of Medicine | UCSF

I am a cardiologist and electrophysiologist with expertise in determining the risk of patients and families prone to sudden cardiac death (SCD) and ventricular arrhythmias. I specialize in catheter ablation of complex arrhythmias, implanting defibrillators and resynchronization devices, with special expertise in performing these procedures for patients with congenital heart disease. I am the developer and principal investigator of the POstmortem Systematic InvesTigation of Sudden Cardiac Death (POST SCD) study, a collaboration with the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner funded by the NIH since 2010, to more accurately define SCD and determine its underlying causes, risk factors and genetics. I am also the principal investigator for the San Francisco POstmortem Systematic InvesTigation of Sudden Death in the Young (POST SDY) registry funded by the CDC to more accurately define sudden death in pediatric populations. At the intersection of medicine and law, I also study the risk of sudden death with the use of Tasers by law enforcement agencies.
