Dr. Michelle Nakphong is a social epidemiologist and an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Prevention Science at UCSF. Her research focuses on structured social exclusion, inclusive policies, and their impact on health care access and health focusing on three areas: 1) economic empowerment, and 2) immigrant health, and 3) person-centered sexual and reproductive health care. Her research with Asian American populations examines the intersections of immigration, employment, and health care policies. She has worked on the multi-methods Research on Immigrant Health and State Policies (RIGHTS) study among Asian and Latine immigrants in California investigating employment exclusions (inability to obtain jobs because of legal status, wage theft, etc.) and their impact on health care access. Past research has investigated immigrant women’s experiences of maternity care and undocumented young adults’ contraceptive use and mental health.
