Galen Joseph

I am Professor of Anthropology in the UCSF Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. I am also a member of the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the UCSF Program in Bioethics and the Center For Vulnerable Populations at ZSFG. My research examines the socio-cultural and institutional dimensions of inequities in cancer care and translational genomics. As an anthropologist, I specialize in ethnographic approaches, but use a range of mixed qualitative and quantitative methods and community-based participatory research to investigate issues affecting vulnerable and medically underserved populations across the cancer continuum and in the context of the translation of new genomic technologies to clinical settings. My research program has primarily focused on 1) ethical and social implications of genomics; 2) clinical translation of genomics to historically underrepresented populations and under resourced settings; 3) the participation of vulnerable populations in clinical research.
