I am a Professor of Communication Studies and Asian Pacific American Studies at the University of San Francisco. Trained as a qualitative ethnographer and discourse analyst, my research examines complementary and integrative therapies from a health communication and cultural perspective. Recent projects have tested an integrative nutritional counseling (INC) guide and curriculum for Chinese Americans with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular health. We will be expanding this program to movement in partnership with OnLok. I have also partnered on projects examining in-patient acupuncture and pain counseling for patients hospitalized with cancer (PRACXIS) and analyzing Chinese Americans’ recorded conversations with primary care providers regarding mental health, complementary medicine, and the use of lay and professional interpreters.
