Dr. Christabel K. Cheung is an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work and Member of the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. As a social and behavioral scientist, Dr. Cheung’s psychosocial oncology research addresses critical issues related to cancer survivorship among adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients diagnosed between ages 15-39 years. Her work focuses on financial hardship and disability, disparities and social determinants of health and mental health, antiracist patient engagement, and the development of embodied research methods—a qualitative approach she pioneered for the social sciences and medicine. Dr. Cheung holds academic affiliations with esteemed research institutions including AYA CARES at Michigan Medicine, the MELD Research Group for the Southern California Cancer Surveillance Program, the Emancipatory Sciences Lab at the University of California, San Francisco, the STRONG AYA Core Outcomes Set Study at The Netherlands Cancer Institute, and the University of Hawaii Cancer Center. Additionally, she has served as the AYA patient research advocate for the SWOG Cancer Research Network, which is funded by the National Cancer Institute to design and implement cancer clinical trials.
